“At the Bauhaus, inside is outside and outside is inside.”

Bauhaus Agents

As part of the Bauhaus Agents programme, primary school pupils are exploring the architecture of Dessau’s Bauhaus using experimental drawing techniques. The results are more than just impressive graphic insights and designs. Within the framework of the “Verzeichnet!” project, the young students are also testing the ways that future visitors could explore these icons of modern architecture independently with the help of a ZeichenKIT.

“At the Bauhaus, inside is outside and outside is inside.” That was the verdict of third graders from the Am Akazienwäldchen primary school in Dessau-Roßlau who went on a drawing field trip through the Bauhaus building last year. “Gropius sat on the bridge like a captain on his ship”, they observe on another poster from the series that was inspired by the excursion, which was part of the workshop series “Verzeichnet!”, which means Draw! Over four project days, the nine- and ten-year-olds recorded the Bauhaus building’s unique architectural features and then thought about their effects by using a range of experimental drawing and collage techniques.

The “Verzeichnet!” series was developed by Dessau’s Bauhaus Agents. Recently, the primary school pupils went on another drawing field trip, this time to the Dessau Masters’ Houses. They are currently working on developing a new series of poster collages. Next on the agenda is the Bauhaus estate of Dessau-Törten, in September.

Which drawing techniques and instructions are best suited for what age groups when trying to capture the particular conceptual and design features of the various Bauhaus buildings? The Dessau Bauhaus Agents have been developing methods for the drawing field trips together with Christian Zabel. The Leipzig-based graphic artist and illustrator also accompanies the pupils throughout the course of the project. Through interactions with the “test draughtspeople”, the assignments and graphic inspirations are tested and modified if needed. In addition to primary school pupils, the Bauhaus Agents have also involved students from higher class levels, including the 10th grade class of the Dessau Gymnasium Philanthropinum and the 9th grade class of the Nelson Mandela School in Berlin.

The results of the project are being channelled into development of the ZeichenKIT, a drawing kit that can be used by future visitors as a tool to help explore the Dessau Bauhaus buildings independently. Already this year, some of the posters from the “Verzeichnet!” series will be displayed on an advertising column in the schoolyard of the Am Akazienwäldchen primary school.
