Michal Kosakowski

Born 1975 in Szczecin, Poland.

Michal Kosakowski is a video artist and director, producer, cameraman and cutter of numerous short, experimental, documentary and feature films, as well as video installations and art films. His work includes more than 100 film projects, shown at international film festivals and exhibitions and winners of multiple awards.

Michal Kosakowski moved with his parents when he was ten from Poland to Vienna, where he discovered his passion for experimental and documentary film. Later he founded his first independent film production company, DARK PRODUCTIONS, which has produced more than 30 short films. After graduating from the Handelsakademie in Vienna he studied film production at the Vienna Film Academy from 1995 to 1996.

From 1997 to 2000 he attended the artist workshops at FABRICA, BENETTON Communication Research Center in Northern Italy, where he worked together with star photographer Oliviero Toscani on various film and culture projects. From 2001 he worked as cutter and concept developer for the DMC – DESIGN FOR MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION advertising agency in Vienna. He then founded NOSUGAR ADDED Filmproduktion focussing on experimental, musical and art film.

His films can be found in the collections of the Library of the University of Amsterdam, the Danish Film Institute and others and are regularly presented at international symposia. Over the past 20 years Kosakowski has implemented various international artistic film projects, which have been performed at the most renowned venues: the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Kunstwerke Berlin, C/O Berlin, Städtische Kunsthalle Munich / Lothringer 13, Filmfestival in Rotterdam, KunstFilmBiennale in Cologne, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Pierogi Gallery in New York and the Soho Center in Beijing, among others. His works can also be seen on predominantly culture-oriented television channels such as ARTE, CANAL+, ORF and RAI.
