In the first decade of the Bauhaus – the 1920s – the developments of the Free and Hanseatic City were lastingly shaped by the Chief Building Director Fritz Schumacher. His urban planning legacy includes the Kontorhaus Quarter, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, and the Chilehaus built in 1924 – an iconic example of brick expressionism, which is still influential to this day – as well as numerous settlement plans, such as those of Jarrestadt.
Public buildings such as the market hall at Klosterwall or the Holthusen swimming pool in Eppendorf and cultural buildings such as the planetarium in the Stadtpark or the Museum for Hamburg History at Holstenwall shape Hamburg just as much as the chapel and crematorium in the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
