Discover Bauhaus

Tour 1

Experience the beginnings of the Bauhaus in Weimar and admire its outstanding legacy, which spreads from Dessau-Roßlau to the striking residential buildings in Berlin. It’s not only these focal points that can be experienced on this route, however: many other impressive examples of modernist architecture can be found along the way that bring the history of the Bauhaus to life, such as Haus Schulenburg in Gera, the ceramics workshop in Dornburg and the Federal School in Bernau.

The tour outlined here is a suggestion for a self-organised trip and cannot be booked as an package via the Bauhaus Cooperation Berlin Dessau Weimar or the state tourism agencies.

Day 1: Birthplace of the Bauhaus

  • Travel to Weimar to the birthplace of the Bauhaus
  • Guided walking tour “Bauhaus in Weimar” along selected buildings of modernism, amongst others the Haus Am Horn; the walking tour ends at the new bauhaus museum weimar
  • Guided visit to the bauhaus museum weimar
  • Overnight stay in Weimar

  • Visit the collection and the special exhibition at the Neues Museum Weimar
  • Walking tour through Erfurt on the trail of the Bauhaus
  • Walking tour: Henry van de Velde and the Bauhaus artists in Jena

Day 2: Paths to the Bauhaus

  • Morning: travel to Gera; walking tour with visit to the Schulenburg mansion
  • After lunch: onward journey to Dessau-Roßlau
  • Opportunity for a garden tour with guide in the Schloss Wörlitz in the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz
  • Personal evening activities; overnight stay in Dessau-Roßlau

Day 3: Bauhaus in pure form

Day 4: Bauhaus in the capital

  • Morning: city exploration on the trail of the Bauhausler in Berlin
  • followed by a visit to the special exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie or another exhibition, for example at Jewish Museum
  • Afternoon: sightseeing tour with visit to selected housing estates like the Hufeisensiedlung and Siemensstadt, with an expert tour guide
  • Overnight stay in Berlin

  • Visit to the observatory in the Einstein Tower in Potsdam
  • Albert Einstein’s summer house in Caputh

Day 5: Lived Bauhaus

  • After breakfast: an exclusive guided tour of the Mies van der Rohe House (Lemke House) with visit the current exhibition
  • followed by travel to Bernau and tour of the Bauhaus Monument of the Federal School Bernau (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Return travel
