Portfolio for Walter Gropius

László Moholy-Nagy, 1924

On the occasion of Gropius’s 41st birthday, the Bauhaus’s masters of form (with the exception of Gerhard Marcks) gave their director a joint present. At the suggestion of Moholy-Nagy, each used their respective design vocabulary to reinterpret a photo published in the newspaper Vossische Zeitung. The result of this collaboration reflects the plurality of art concepts at the Bauhaus and provides subtle hints about the masters’ attitude towards the direction of developments at the Bauhaus.
