Josef Albers, who was a practising Catholic, had a fondness for the symbolism of glass as a work material. The stained glass window "Scherben im Gitterbild" (Shards in a Picture Grid) was made in 1921 when Albers was a student in the glass painting workshop, of which he later became director at the behest of Walter Gropius. This work was a prototype for the glass windows that Albers went on to make, for instance for the Sommerfeld House.
