A Bauhaus festival for the 21st century: American choreographer Trajal Harrell, Mykki Blanco, FAKA, Aïsha Devi feat. Tianzhuo Chen and numerous other artists from various parts of the world celebrate the aesthetic and cultural plurality of the present. Dance,
installations, party, performance and a social sculpture that goes through a multitude of forms.
The Bauhaus Club 2.019: Hyper.Culture reflects the tradition of the early Bauhaus festivals, where architects, performing artists, theatre makers and visionaries came together to meet in creative exchange. In addition to concerts by the Bauhaus Band, these events in particular also included elements of the performing arts (dance, puppet theatre, sketches, etc.).
The interdisciplinary approach of the Bauhaus festivals is expressed in the German premiere of the performative installation, “Hoochie Koochie × Bauhaus”, by Trajal Harrell. Danced sculptures with elements of fashion, music and visual art connect in the American choreographer’s performative installation. The choreographic fragments, which are performed simultaneously in different spaces, conjure up a multitude of references to various
dance forms and styles here: From Japanese Butoh dance, post-modern and modern dance, through to the Voguing culture of the New York underground of the 60s. While concerts and performances are held in the studio and club rooms of the Academy of the Arts, Harrell works with his dancers in hall 1 on the topfloor. As a performative installation “Hoochie Koochie × Bauhaus” goes on and on into the early hours of the morning …
The music programme also presents itself in a polymorphic way:
As a queer icon performance artist, Mykki Blanco has radically turned hip-hop signs on their heads. As part of “Bauhaus 2.019:
Hyper.Culture” the enfant terrible of queer pop culture now presents a show he has developed for this Bauhaus festival, with which he performs new and unreleased songs for the first time and presents a new Bauhaus manifesto for the 21st century! “Light Luxury”, a collaboration by Geneva artist Aïsha Devi and performing artist Tianzhuo Chen based in Shanghai and Beijing, is
presented as a hybrid of concert and performance. Inspired by the design language of the early Bauhaus parties, the Chinese artist has developed a light sculpture and new video work as part of “Light Luxury”. FAKA from Johannesburg have also developed a special performance for the night with musical and performative elements that examine the Bauhaus ideas from a South African perspective. The night will be rung in by DJ Bigger, who accompanied FAKA last year on their Europe tour, and in his set presents the South African underground club sound of Gqom. And finally DJ Haram residing in the USA with roots in the Middle East gets the Academy of the Arts’ clubrooms vibrating into the early hours.
