Oskar Schlemmer’s “Triadic Ballet” now enjoys mythical status. In 2014 it was reconstructed in full compliance and largely under wraps in the Gerhard Bohner choreography created in 1977 as a production commissioned by the Academy of the Arts with talented young dancers of the Bayerisches Staatsballett II (today: Bayerisches Jugendballett). The costumes were reproduced as precisely as possible from the originals in 1977. Some are still on view today in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. They manifest Schlemmer’s experimental procedure in movement and his constant search for new materials, which specifically influences the movement. The stage experiments of Oskar Schlemmer and the spatial perception of Gropius’ total theatre were the inspiration for the “Total Dance Theatre” VR production.
Before the costumes are worn on stage in the “The Triadic Ballet” performance on 22 January, some of the original costumes and the mannequin and glass costume (reconstructed for the first time in 2018 by Torsten Blume, Dessau) can be inspected in the exhibition from every perspective for their materials, qualities and their design principles. So how do the dancers wear theses sculptures made from wood, plastic, textiles, papier mâché, glass, wire and whalebone? How do they move in them, how do they see and feel, how do they orientate themselves in the room and how does the costume influence movement? Susanne Stehle, costume designer and production manager for dance costumes at the Bayerische Staatsoper, played a decisive part in 2014 in the reconstruction of the original costumes, which Ulrike Dietrich produced in 1977 for the production in Gerhard Bohner’s choreography. Susanne Stehle provides infos on the details, structure and materials in a guide and in a workshop.
A film programme on “Kunstfigur” (art figure) and on the movement concepts of the Bauhaus in cooperation with Bauhaus Dessau complements this part of the installation.
