FOLLOWER - female follows form

Almost 100 years after the famous Bauhaus motto "form follows function" the artists Simone Kessler & Edward Beierle are building a bridge to the present with the project FOLLOWER - female follows form.

FOLLOWER - female follows form is the name given to the art project that the two artists have developed for the Hamburger Architektursommer 2019. Now it's not only the form following the function, but also the general public the architecture and the social media followers that follow the art project.

FOLLOWER - female follows form is above all a public participation format that invites visitors to experience architecture and urban space anew through playful investigation according to artistic instructions. This is done by placing oneself in (unfamiliar) physical relation to the architecture and photographically capturing the moment.

The aim is to experience a change of perspective in relation to architecture and urban space through a literally new (body) posture in space. Participants and viewers of the action on site, or of the photographs taken, thus have the opportunity to reflect anew on the relationship between man and architecture on different (thought) levels.

At the beginning of the Architektursommer 2019, "instruction manuals", developed by the artists, will be hung in the form of large-format printed tarpaulins, scattered around the city at selected locations within public spaces. Photo locations are at the Elbphilharmonie, the Hafencity University, the HafenCity, the Patriotische Gesellschaft von 1765 near Trostbrücke, the Marktstraße and the Deichtorhallen.

These large printed manuals give examples of the photographic investigations made by the artists themselves on that particular site. The photos are accompanied by an invitation and instructions for the general public to participate in the project during the Architektursommer 2019 and to FOLLOW the role model of the artists.  

During this time, photos can be taken at the selected locations and made available to the artists in digital form. The pictures will be collected and published on a project page.

At the end of Architektursommer 2019, all the photos submitted, the artists pictures and the  "Instructions" will be taken down and presented in Galerie 21 of Künstlerhaus Vorwerk-Stift as part of the exhibition FOLLOWER - female follows form.
